Modern Guy

When I was studying and playing “Love Your Love the Most,” I noticed how weird it felt for me to sing about loving college football games, NASCAR, small mouth bass and my truck (I don’t drive a truck), etc., and it made me think that while I don’t fit the exact archetype of the “country” guy, that there’s another kind of country music fan out there… like myself. So I wrote a song about being a modern, sensitive kind of guy who loves and supports his wife, who is a good listener most of the time, but still needs to get rowdy to recharge.

Maybe it’s a bit too literal. The chorus starts “I’m a modern guy,” but then again, maybe that lack of metaphor allows sincerity to seep through. I don’t know. The arrangement is still kind of loose (especially since it’s just me and a guitar), but I feel like it’s close. What do y’all think?

Love Your Love the Most

So I figured it was about time for another contemporary country hit. And try as I might, I just can’t identify with some of the songs that are topping the charts out there. I did like this one, though, despite it being mostly just another list of things that materially reinforce the modern “country” archetype. The redeeming factor in this song is the chorus-catch, when the singer discounts the importance of all the material things when they’re compared to his partner’s love.

Nothing is too fancy in the chord changes or the singing of this song; it’s pretty straight-forward, played in G with a capo on the third fret. Its singalongability (ha) is probably a favorable factor in its popularity, and Eric Church, who co-wrote the song with Michael Heeney [1], sings it spot-on with inconsistencies in all the right places that give the radio recording a nice, natural cadence.

Personally, I identified with “loving” only about half of the things listed in the song, but, as a happy newlywed, I definitely am on board with the main theme and the chorus. Maybe that’s why this one spoke to me this time.
